RAGBRAI’24 Day 6: Ottumwa to Mt. Pleasant (100 miles)

Day 6 of RAGBRAI was the optional CENTURY DAY! The normal route was 85 miles, but at about mile 70, riders can decide to take an extra 15-mile loop to make it 100 miles. I was leaning against doing the optional loop, since we were fighting pretty stiff headwinds from the southeast, and it was getting warm (96 in the sun). But when I learned that both my friends from Chippewa Falls were going to do the full 100, then I knew I needed to do it as well, for fear of the jeering I’d face on the six-hour car trip home on Saturday. But I am glad I did it! I didn’t stop to think that as soon as I turned north and back west, we’d have a TAILWIND for that extra loop! I had to ride a couple more miles after the campsite to get the odometer over 100.0, but I was surprised that I wasn’t all that tired. Another CENTURY RIDE in the books!
